Summary: After an injury leaves Chloe permanently blind in one eye, she struggles with accepting the change.
Chloe groaned as she started to wake up. “Hey, take it easy. You okay?” Chloe blinked the sleep out of her eyes until Nadine’s image cleared. “Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?” She started to get out of bed, but stopped when she remembered what happened a week ago. She and Nadine had been fighting with Orca over the Tusk of Ganesh, when Sam suddenly appeared and distracted them. Orca took advantage of their momentary lack of attention and slashed her face. When she woke up three days later, she learned that Nadine had killed Orca and looked after her and they, along with Sam, were now traveling with Nathan, Elena, and Sully on their ship.
Chloe sat back and sighed. “Sorry. I need to get my head back in the game.”
Nadine sat closer to Chloe and put a hand on her arm. “It’s alright. Your head’s been through a lot. It’s going to take some time to feel like yourself again.”
Chloe turned her head and looked at her reflection in the mirror across the cabin. She now had a scar that started above her right eye and ran diagonally across her face over her left eye and ended at her cheek. Her left eye was now a cloudy gray, instead of the clear gray it used to be. Thanks to Orca, and to a lesser extent, Sam, she had lost vision in that eye.
Nadine gently squeezed Chloe’s arm. “Do you want to leave the cabin today? Some fresh air will do you some good.”
Chloe looked down, ashamed at herself. She hadn’t left the cabin since she woke up. “I don’t want the others to see me like this and I’m not ready to see Sam. He’s part of the reason I look like this.”
Nadine understood. If Sam hadn’t distracted them, Chloe wouldn’t have gotten hurt. He deserved the punch in the face she gave him after Chloe was bandaged up. “We can go when everyone is having breakfast. I can’t look at Sam right now either. He should have known better.”
Chloe leaned into Nadine. “Okay.”
Nadine wrapped her arms around Chloe and kissed the top of her head. They stayed like that until the sounds of the others heading towards the galley disappeared. They got dressed and Chloe walked over to the vanity, once again staring at her new scar.
Nadine caught Chloe’s action and thought something from her clothing chest might help her feel better. She slowly walked up behind Chloe and wrapped her arms around her waist, holding a red bandana out in front of her. “Here. You can use this to cover the scar. I’ll put it on for you, if you want.” Chloe’s eyes met hers in the mirror, and she nodded. “Thank you.”
After tying the bandana in place, Nadine picked Chloe up and carried her bridal style onto the deck. Chloe inhaled deeply and let it out slowly. “You were right. I needed this. Thank you for looking after me. I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
“You only ever needed to be yourself. With or without the scar, you are the one I fell in love with, and I’ll be by your side for as long as you’ll have me.”
Just seconds after Nadine finished speaking, Chloe kissed her hard. When they could no longer breathe, they pulled apart but kept their foreheads touching. Staring into Nadine’s warm, brown eyes, Chloe realized that even though her appearance would be forever changed, she wouldn’t really change at all.
